Seek

As the saying goes seek and you shall find.

After trawling seek.com for the past couple of days and applying for  a multitude of graduate positions I've come to realise that this statement is a downright lie.

It should be amended to seek and you shall find*

*Subject to terms and conditions:Participants must have ridiculously high marks at university, extra-curricular activities that imply no life outside of law, have worked in the exact position in which you seek to gain an entry level position into, be a robot...

WORKWEAR- Working 9 to 5...

Or should I say 8 to 6 or even later for most lawyers out there.

Since the office is where most lawyers spend their time I refuse to think that I'm destined to a life of boring grey suits.

Here's my pick of the best shoes and handbags.

Jimmy Choo Lyssa Leather Point toe flats
$851.41 via Net-a-porter

Flats are definitely the way to go but if you insist on heels please steer clear of kitten heels. They are the bane of my existence. Why were they invented? They do not elongate the legs. They give, at best, a couple of centimetres of extra height and they are not comfortable! Get rid of them I say.

This entire outfit. Monochrome it. Pant suit.

Nicholas Kirkwood
Pebbled Leather Loafers $495

Mansur Gavriel
The best carry-all tote
$485 via Who What Wear

Sophie Hulme Leather Tote Bag

One from my personal wardrobe file
Givenchy Antigona Medium
$3350

Louboutin and his Trademark Red Soles

Anyone who knows anything about fashion knows about Christian Louboutin and his famous red soled shoes. Christian is a famous parisien footwear designer who helped bring stilettos back into fashion. His famous red soled bottoms are a trademark Pantone 18-1663 TPX.

There have been several disputes centered around this trademark, the designer successfully battled YSL in a New York court in 2012 and holds a valid Trademark in the US as a result. Though it seems that fashion designers cannot validly trademark colour and YSL was entitled to create its completely red suede shoes with red bottoms.

The Federal Court of Appeals however did rule that Christian Louboutin was entitled to protect itself from copycats. No other shoe brand is permitted to use the contrasting colour of the bottoms if the shoe is not red as it would likely confuse customers into thinking that the shoes were a pair of Louboutins. The red sole is a distinctive and recognisable marker.

For more on Louboutin's recent court battles see this article from The Fashion Law Blog.

Reasons To Date a Lawyer (part 1)

Surrounded by a sea of men you would think that finding a suitable partner would be easy for a female lawyer. But then, I read articles like this: 17 Things you should know before dating a lawyer.

And I'm reminded of the reality, no one wants to date a lawyer moreover a female one!

It is universally accepted that lawyers are hated, unless of course you're Harvey Specter.

Not only that but being a female lawyer apparently means I am argumentative, high maintenance, have a bigger bank balance than you and work all the time. This article got me thinking, dating is already hard enough in the modern world where a new girl is a just a right swipe away.

"Do female lawyers face insurmountable criticism? Or is it that we judge everyone too harshly? Or maybe guys just don't like smart girls? Or is it frowned upon for a female to marry someone who earns less than her? Who knows?"

Maybe I'll make like Miranda Hobbs and just marry a Steve Brady?

Fashion Law a Match Made in Givenchy Heaven.

In an age where the internet is filled with so much blogger noise,  I question the need for another fashion/personal style blog.

 But hear me out!

I am a self-confessed fashion addict though I knew I didn't want a career in fashion. This stemmed from an early realisation that I lacked talent and creativity. Instead I preferred to appreciate the fashion world from a far.

So I carried on with my life of becoming a lawyer because English and arguing are one of the few things I am good at. Like many of the others before me, it was only towards the end of my law degree that I sensed the impending doom. Of course I didn't manage to secure a clerkship! I didn't want one anyway or so I consoled myself. I don't want to work somewhere boring with old people.

"But will I ever get a job? Am I doomed to read contracts forever? Maybe I should have been more involved in the Law Society and partied less. Is it too late to do more extra-curricular acitivities- oh wait I hate sport. What about volunteering maybe I can do that. What about my personality maybe that will sell?"

Then a thought hit me. Maybe I'm not suited to be a lawyer.

Is fashion and the law contradictory?

My knowledge of fashion and the law being mentioned in the same context goes as deep as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde. And Margaret Zhang of Shine by Three. That didn't deter me from wanting to combine my love of fashion and the law. Upon further research I discovered that Fashion and the Law are not like oil and water but more like a good denim jacket and a pair of converse shoes- necessary elements of every fashionistas' wardrobe.

You see, in order to protect brands and ideas (intellectual property) fashion houses need lawyers to navigate the difficult commercial world as well as protect their property from copyright or trademark infringement. Hence the Vogue Defender is born. This blog will be a reflection of my two great loves. Fashion and the Law a match made in Givenchy heaven.
